This webinar is designed to help environmental and waste professionals come up to speed on the complex area of waste classification, resource recovery, and its management. QLD environmental laws establish a complex set of legal controls on the generation, transport, re-use, recycling, treatment and disposal of wastes. There are many pitfalls and administrative processes that abound in the management of wastes in QLD. The workshop is run over lunch time [eat and train] over three consecutive days [3 x 1 hour sessions] plus question time will cover the following areas:
Session 1: General Waste Classification and Laws:
- Introduction – Waste and contaminated sites
- Overview of the waste laws covering, waste definition, waste licensing, waste transport laws
- Illegal waste liabilities: dumping, land pollution, transporters and facilities
- Introduction to waste classification - Regulated & Non-regulated wastes
- Permits for disposal and treatment of contaminated soils
- EP Act, Regulation and Waste Reduction and Recycling Act (WRRA) affecting contaminated sites
- ERA triggers for on-site management of contaminated soil, landfill, treatment etc.
- General conditions for transporting and storing wastes
- Waste levy, discounts, exemptions and how it operates across Queensland
Session 2: End of Waste Codes and Other Wastes:
- Special treatment of contaminated soils: regulated and contaminated soil waste levy charges
- End of Waste Codes (EoW): coverage, use, documentation etc.
- Usefulness of EoWs for treated contaminated soils
- Applying for specific EoWs not covered by the published list and fees
- Overview on asbestos waste and problems with recycling soils and stockpiles
- Sampling, testing, storing, application and other requirements
- Tips on when and how to apply for specific EoW applications
- Managing asbestos wastes
Session 3: Regulated, Hazardous Wastes and Immobilisation
- Classification of Regulated wastes under Sch9 EP Regulation - how it works
- Desktop or default approach
- Sampling and testing approach
- Exempt wastes including ground waters
- Treatment of PFAS wastes
- Typical landfill acceptance criteria based on concentrations and TCLPs
- Liquid wastes and triggers for regulated wastes
- Immobilisation, where can it be used?
Transportation and Tracking of Trackable Wastes
- Examine the tracking system for Queensland
- Waste tracking data and on-line waste tracking
- Interstate tracking
