This workshop will answer the above questions and equip attendees on
how to store and handle hazardous chemicals to
minimise risk largely through the use of
Australian Standards and various risk management practices and thought processes.


It is ideal for supervisors and managers of industrial sites and waste management facilities
to get up to speed on Dangerous
Goods storage.

Workshop: A 3 x 1.1 lunch hour webinar designed to help participants understand how to go about storage and handling at
acceptable risk levels under the Workplace Health and Safety laws covering:

Session 1: Overview of Dangerous Goods & GHS classifications and ADG Code

  • What are Dangerous Goods, Hazardous Substances and Hazardous Chemicals?
  • Overview of Dangerous Goods and Globally Harmonized System (GHS)
    • Classification Hazardous Chemicals under DG and GHS
    • Covering DG classes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 & 9 and thresholds
    • Pictograms and DG diamonds & GHS pictograms
    • Discussing basic hazardous properties of each class
    • Packaging Groups for dangerous goods, impact and use
  • Use of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code 7.6th edition

Session 2: GHS Labelling of packages, DG placarding of Depots, notifications and risk controls

  • DG and GHS labelling of packages:
    • 9 parts to labelling under GHS
    • Hazard and Precautionary statements
    • Duplicative DG and GHS labelling of packages
  • Labelling of pipelines and signage
  • Changes from GHS version 7 from version 2
  • Manifest & Notifications to Safework NSW and Fire + Rescue
  • Risk controls of hazardous chemicals under Work Health and Safety laws

Session 3: Use of Australian Standards for separation, bunding,  incompatibility & minor storage

  • Introduction to the use of Australian Standards for DG storage depot design
  • Codes of Practice for Storage and Handling of Hazardous Chemicals
  • Overview of AS 1596 Class 2.1 (LPG), AS 4332 Class 2.2 & Class 2.3 toxic gases
  • AS 1940 Flammable liquids overview of separation distances
  • General bunding for bulk and packaged DG liquids including flammables
  • Flammable liquid Packaged stores internal and external storages
  • Minor storage, separaton, ignition sources
  • AS 3833 Segregation, isolation distances for mixed class stores
  • Class 8 Corrosives, separation, training and bunding
  • Training requirements for staff and management
  • Case study questions and answers
