ASBG brings its well renowned Waste Workshop to your desktop

This workshop set is designed to help environmental and waste professionals come up to speed on the complex area of waste classification, resource recovery, and its management. NSW environmental laws establish a complex set of legal controls on the generation, transport, re-use, recycling, treatment and disposal of wastes.  There are many pitfalls and administrative processes that abound in the management of wastes in NSW.  The workshop is run over lunch time [eat and train] over two consecutive days [3 x 1 hour sessions] plus question time will cover the following areas:

Session 1: General Waste Classification and Laws –  7 April 11 am - 12:15 pm

  • Definition of waste: waste is very broadly defined, but how broad?
  • Illegal waste activities:  transport, landfilling and pollution of land offenses
  • Impacts of the new POEO (Waste) Regulation 2014: Proximity principle, Scheduled waste facilities, immobilisation approvals and other relevant changes
  • Waste laws and licensing requirements under POEO Act
  • Introduction of the 6 steps in waste classification

Session 2: Asbestos Waste and Resource Recovery Orders and Exemptions: - 8 April 6 April 11 am - 12:15 pm

  • Asbestos:
    • Classification - what is asbestos waste and when is asbestos containing material?
    • Asbestos waste laws
    • Management and tracking of asbestos wastes
  • Acid sulfate soils classification and management
  • Use of Resource Recovery Exemptions and Orders (RRO/E):
    • What do they cover and where to use them
    • How to apply for a special RRO/E
    • Where they apply and what to do to implement them
  • Typical dangerous goods classifications for hazardous wastes

 Session 3: Hazardous Wastes: - 9 April 6 April 11 am - 12:15 pm

  • Hazardous Waste classification:
    • Covering hazardous, restricted, trackable & liquid wastes
    • Chemical assessment: use of CT, SCC and TCLP tests and where to apply them
    • Immobilisation: what is it and where to use it and approval processes
  • Waste tracking: waste codes, intra-state and interstate and the EPA’s on-line system and the Hazardous Waste NEPM interstate waste tracking

Competency Test will be emailed after the end of the last session.
Those who successfully email back and complete the test will be issued competency certificates.
