Storage and handling of Dangerous Goods are required to be done in a safe manner.
The issue is what is an accepted safe manner? Issues arise such as:
- Can you store aerosols with flammable liquids in cabinets?
- Can all corrosive chemicals be stored in the same store?
- Why can't you store pallets of flammable liquids in a general warehouse?
This workshop will equip organisations on how to store and handle hazardous chemicals to minimise
risk largely through the use of Australian Standards and various risk management practices and thought processes.
Workshop: A half-day workshop designed to help participants understand how to go about storage and handling
at acceptable risk levels under the Workplace Health and Safety laws covering:
- Overview of the hazardous chemicals legislative requirements on storage risk
- Use of the Australian Dangerous Goods Code 7.4 ed for classification of classes and packaging groups and
comparable GHS classifications - Documentation, notification and manifest requirements under WHS laws
- Introduction on the use of Australian Standards for depot design for Classes 2, 3, 5.1, 6.1 and 8
- Separation distances covering flammables, corrosives, toxics and oxidizing substances
- Interaction - avoiding incompatible and dangerously reactive storage
- Flammables - separation of ignition sources
- Ventilation requirements for flammables, toxics and corrosives
- Bunding and spill management- variations between classes and limited storage area solutions
- Mixed classes of dangerous goods storages
- Minor storage - mixed storage, flammables, aerosols, corrosives, toxics and oxidizers
- Workshop of various storages using Australian Standards
Use of Australian Standards for Hazardous Chemical storage is discussed as generic starting points. Alternative
storages which are not compliant with AS are are considered and when they can be applied.
